that sucks…
February 8th, 2010Static - Ryan Lindsey / BRONCHO
February 5th, 2010This week’s Static was a second installment shot with the good kids at Blackwatch Studios in Norman - singer/songwriter Ryan Lindsey and his new punk rock project BRONCHO.
new video gear…
February 5th, 2010I said goodbye to some gear the other day and ordered its replacement & successor. I’m a fan of the gear over at Redrock Micro and I bought the Redrock Micro M2 setup in March 2009. I got my Canon 7D and just sat in my closet collecting dust and refusing to pay rent. The good kids over at Red Chair Productions bought my M2 setup for their production needs and I was able to get a new Redrock eyeSpy Shouldermount Rig.

Did I mention they skip the whole owner’s manual thing and instead have sweet instructional videos?
my notebooks
February 2nd, 2010If you’ve known me for any period of time, you’ll know of the little black notebooks I almost always have nearby. I started using Moleskine notebooks back in late high school/early college and continue to have one today. I’m one of those people who if I don’t write it down, I won’t remember it (just ask my wife).

I’ve still got all of the notebooks I’ve used over the years and I was digging through several of them recently looking for some inspiration for a project I’m working on. I scanned in a couple of my favorites.

While my iPhone does most of the heavy lifting in the communicating & organizational needs of my life, these notebooks are basically the written record of where I’ve been and what I’ve done. In case I get famous one day, historical researchers will know where to look… (wink, wink…)

I’m also a big collector of stickers and stamps from the different places I’ve been. If you’re nice and smile when you walk through customs in foreign countries, sometimes the customs agent will hook you up with a second stamp after they mark your passport. Entering the USA though is often another story - those guys/gals are typically stone-faced and quite the opposite of the ‘welcome’ mat you cross before entering someone’s home.
A One-Man Short Film
January 30th, 2010from movingstillmedia.com
The democratization of technology is opening the doors to engaging film projects made entirely by one person. Here’s a great example by rock climber Renen Ozturk – he not only stars in it, but is the DP, Director, and entire crew. The power of a lightweight, versatile HDSLR (Lumix GH1 in this case) enables a highly stylized documentary with no production budget.

here’s the behind the scenes video -
New from Static
January 22nd, 2010The idea behind Static was really born out of some previous projects I’d worked on along with some other projects I’d found online. This past Saturday I was able to expand on the idea and once again leave the OPUBCO video studio and head out to an actual recording studio.
I’ve worked with the guys over at Blackwatch Studios in Norman several times before and I approached them to help out with Static. I’d run the cameras and have them take care of the audio. They setup three bands to record that day, Dave the boss and Mike Jones freed me up by helping out with setup and lighting, and I ran cameras. George Lang usually hosts the shows, but he was out of town leaving me to also run the interviews.
In the coming weeks, there will be two more bands we recorded at Blackwatch Studios as well as a sit down interview with Chad Copelin and Jarod Evans, the guys behind Blackwatch. Major kudos to Chad and Jarod. If you’re a band or artist looking to record, I can’t recommend them enough. Make sure to check them out.
more from The Non’s Tadamia album release
January 20th, 2010I mentioned it earlier about Sherree Chamberlain and The Uglysuit opening up the night with some great music. Here’s what I came up with from my perch atop the subwoofer on the left side of the room.
And if anyone has a connection with The Conservatory, you should tell them to invest in better lighting. At least arranging to get them all close to the same color temperature.
Anderson Cooper rescues boy in Haiti
January 19th, 2010this made me cry at my desk… Here’s the link to the AC 360 blog post. Seeing something like this really makes me want nothing more than to be there right now helping in any way I can.
Lord, please be in Haiti during this time. Please take care that place and its people.
The Non Album Release
January 16th, 2010
Oklahoma City band The Non released a new album with a two night show at The Conservatory. I’ve shot a couple projects in the past with the guys and approached them about shooting their show.
Sherree Chamberlain and The Uglysuit opened up the night with some great music as always, but The Non reminded everyone why they were there with their new music and laser light show. Being in the same boat as the rest of the concert goers, hearing the new tracks from The Non’s Tadamia album helped keep my attention away from the sting of my retinas being burned out by the lasers. I mean really, who needs to see when there is such great music around?
I shot several songs during the evening with my Canon 7D and the Zoom H4n hung from the rafters in the back of the room. I’ll post the rest of The Non’s videos as well as what I shot of Sherree Chamberlain and The Uglysuit soon.
For my friends in Haiti…
January 13th, 2010For a country that has little to nothing going for it, yesterday’s earthquake in Haiti isn’t a welcomed event. I was in Haiti a couple years ago shooting a project at an orphanage there - danitaschildren.org - for a group out of Tulsa called telltheirstory.org. I pray that the friends I made during my time there are okay.
