Canon 5D Mark II sample footage

Shot with a Canon 5D Mark II mounted on a Redrock Micro shoulder mount. The footage is for an upcoming NewsOK project that we should finish up in a couple weeks.

Going into the shoot, we had a game plan involving the 5D Mark II with a couple Ultrasonic lenses, 2 JVC GY-HD200’s, and Dave the boss’s Sony. After a couple minutes of shooting with the 5D, I pretty much turned the other cameras off.

Don’t ask me to take still pictures with it because I’m of little use. I spent about 30mins taking pictures of the inside of my fridge the night before the shoot and all I really learned is that I’m much better at shooting video. I got some great advice on shooting with the 5D from the kids at Stillmotion.ca.

For what it is, this camera records some amazing video. Unfortunately, it captures audio about as poorly as I shoot stills. There are some work arounds that I’ve read about online, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. It records a 30p 1080 image into a H.264 video codec. One of the guys at work knows more of the technical side of things and told me about the nut-ball high bit-rate it records, but all I know is that it completely bogged down my 17″ MBP w/ 4gb of RAM. I’ve talked to several different people who’ve suggested a couple ways to compress the footage so Final Cut Pro isn’t being kicked in the nuts during an edit. We’ll see how that turns out in the coming weeks.

I can’t say enough about the image quality you can get with this camera and good lenses. The embeded youtube video above doesn’t do the image justice - go to the youtube page to watch it in a better HD version. I’m almost bummed that I bought the Redrock M2 Encore w/ the Nikon lens setup a couple weeks ago, but there are still things I can pull off with that rig that I wouldn’t be able to do with the Canon. For now, I’m just hoping the two can learn to be friends and play together.

    a) it’s the 5d, not the d5. You go back and forth, learn your random Canon letters and numbers, son. They have such deep meaning. Seriously, geez.

    b) Fantastic footage. The frame rate feels really high, almost too much so, but I haven’t played around with ours at the house here, been traveling and too busy, so i have no room to talk about how that camera performs.

Great job, look forward to seeing more from that little camera.

I have to say I posted this late Monday night running on little more than a couple hours sleep and some chicken fried rice. The best part was waking up this AM to your email and re-editing the post on my iPhone while refusing to get out of bed.

    Tanner,
What lens did you shoo that video with?
I’m trying to decide on a first lens to go with my 5D Mark II purchase, its between the kit lens, 24-105mm f/4L IS, or the 24-70mm f/2.8L, what would you do for one who is just as much interested in the HD Video as he is the IQ and pictures?

    Tanner,

Thanks, make sense, the faster glass is usually not the wrong pick. I am almost 99% sure I’ll get the faster glass for my first lens and try to do as good of work as you are doing here. Does your Redrock M2 setup configure into different looks like in this image? http://media.marketwire.com/attachments/200904/MOD-524098_redrock_dslr20_people.jpg

Not sure if I’m the best person to ask about lenses. I shot this piece with a Canon 50mm prime lens. They handed me a couple others, but I felt most comfortable with the 50.

As far as lens to chose, my choice was to get the faster glass (50mm Nikon 1.4/f) for my Redrock M2 setup because I knew I wanted a shallow depth of field and I also knew I’d be working inplaces where I’d need to make the most of available light.
